As creatures go, we humans have got the rest of the animal kingdom topped for weirdness. We like to think we’re the smartest animals, but that may not be the case. We also like to believe that we’re the only ones with moral fiber, but that is disputable. Arguably, humpback whales and probably a few other animals have us beat in both of those categories. So what does make us different?
The answer is right in front of our faces. We are the only animals on earth that wear clothes! That’s what sets us apart. Can you name another animal that goes hiking in brown boots? You might argue that they don’t need to, but neither do we. We feel the need to explore and in order to explore new and potentially hostile territory, we needed to use our creativity and make footwear. If we didn’t need to leave our home turf, we could do perfectly well barefooted in warmer climates.
We can argue about whether or not it was necessity or something else that drove us to explore, but the fact that humans figured out a way to adapt to their environment by making clothing and footwear is interesting enough. No other animals have done that.
Even more interesting is the fact that we have created styles of clothing. We need to wear something to sleep in colder climates, but obviously we don’t need to wear nautica sleepwear when any sort of covering would do just fine!
Fashion is pure indulgence. Those anthropologists who cling to the Darwinian ’survival’ model just don’t have a fashion sense! Other animals do things to attract a mate, but they don’t spend hours choosing their outfits just to turn around and go to sleep! We like fashion because it satisfies needs that go beyond survival.
It can be argued that the need for sports and recreation is uniquely human, but a closer look at the facts refutes this claim. Have you ever seen a video of polar bears sliding down a snowy bank? They look like they’re having fun and when they go to all the trouble of clambering back up to the top of the slope and doing it again, that’s pretty solid evidence that they are doing it simply because it’s fun. We, on the other hand, felt the desire to invent alpine skiing equipment. Why?
So what do all these seemingly absurd examples have in common? The color of our boots, our themed nightwear and our complicated winter sports gear are all products of the imagination. They are expressions of our creativity. Fashion is the ultimate expression of human creativity and that is what makes us uniquely human. Go ahead – shop till you drop! It’s your birthright as a human being.
